There are few things the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t touched. That includes how it’s changing insurance for schools.

Changes in Workers’ Comp might be one of the biggest issues school districts face. They haven’t been that big of a threat up until now, with many schools going completely virtual. However, as more and more schools opt for in-person instruction, claims may rise. Many teachers may resist coming back and end up filing claims that they have been exposed to COVID-19 and are now at risk for adverse health effects.

While many districts may technically have workers’ comp coverage for claims such as communicable diseases, the question will become how the carrier deems the claims as either one claim or multiple claims. Multiple half-million dollar claims can add up quickly.

School districts may also see a change in property line of coverage. Unlike retail businesses or restaurants that were shut down during the pandemic, schools have mostly been hurt with lost tuition, rather than lost sales.

They may have also had to buy new laptops for at-home learning or additional costs incurred fo2021  building and implementing distance learning.  For those who have exposure, they need to figure out how to pay any additional compensation to employees and recover whatever revenue might have been lost due to things like food spoilage.
