Do I Need Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance is designed to help cover eligible veterinary expenses when your pet is injured or becomes ill.  Depending on the policy, coverage may be available for expenses associated with accidents, illnesses, diagnostic testing, treatment, medications, and other veterinary services.

In many cases, you pay the veterinarian first and then submit a claim to the insurance company who will reimburse you for a percentage of the cost. Some insurers may offer direct payment to veterinarians, so it’s important to understand how claims are handled under the policy you’re considering.

With many pet insurance policies, you'll select a deductible, reimbursement level, and coverage limit. These choices can affect both your premium and how much you may receive back for an eligible veterinary expense. For example, reimbursement levels commonly fall between 70% and 90%.

So, is pet insurance worth it? The answer depends on your pet, your budget, and the type of coverage you're looking for. Here's what to know before choosing a policy.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

What pet insurance covers depends on the plan you choose. The most common types of coverage include:

  • Accident-and-Illness: The most common type of pet insurance, covering eligible costs when your pet is injured or becomes sick. Coverage may include diagnostic testing, prescription medications, treatments, hospitalization, and surgery.
  • Accident-Only: A more limited option that covers eligible expenses related to accidents, but not illnesses. Because definitions can vary by insurer, it’s important to understand what qualifies as an accident under the policy.
  • Wellness: Preventive and routine care, such as vaccines, wellness exams, and blood work, is typically not included in standard accident-and-illness coverage. Wellness coverage may instead be available as an add-on or separate plan.

Does Pet Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

A pre-existing condition is an illness, injury, or health issue that began before your pet’s coverage started. Pet insurance generally does not cover pre-existing conditions.

For example, if your dog begins limping before your policy starts and is later diagnosed with a knee condition, treatment for that condition may not be covered.

It’s also important to understand waiting periods. A waiting period is the time between when your policy starts and when certain coverage becomes available. If your pet becomes sick or injured during this time, the condition may be considered pre-existing and may not be covered.

Recent industry reporting based on North American Pet Health Insurance Association data found that the number of insured pets in North America reached 7.6 million at the end of 2025, up 8.5% from 2024.

What Affects the Cost of Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance costs can vary from pet to pet. When comparing your options, consider factors such as:

  • Your pet's age: Older pets generally cost more to insure than puppies or kittens, and some insurers may have age restrictions for senior pets.
  • Breed: Certain breeds may be more prone to specific illnesses or health conditions, which can affect the cost of coverage.
  • Where you live: Veterinary costs vary by location, which can influence your premium.
  • Type of coverage: More comprehensive coverage generally comes with a higher premium.
  • Deductible: Choosing a lower deductible typically means paying a higher premium.
  • Reimbursement level: A higher reimbursement percentage can increase your premium but may reduce how much you pay out of pocket for covered care.
  • Coverage limits: Higher coverage limits can increase your premium while providing greater financial protection for eligible expenses.

So, is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Pet Insurance May Be Worth Considering If:

  • A large vet bill would strain your budget. Insurance can help make eligible unexpected veterinary expenses more manageable.
  • Your pet is young and healthy. Getting coverage before health problems develop may reduce the likelihood that future conditions are excluded as pre-existing.
  • You want more predictable costs. Paying a regular premium may be easier to plan for than facing a large unexpected veterinary bill.
  • You want added financial protection. Coverage may give you another way to prepare for unexpected accidents or illnesses.

Pet Insurance May Not Be the Right Fit If:

  • You have enough savings for unexpected veterinary care. If you've set aside funds specifically for your pet's medical expenses, you may feel comfortable paying out of pocket.
  • Your pet has significant pre-existing conditions. Because pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, a policy may provide less value depending on your pet's health history and the insurer's terms.

Ultimately, the goal isn't simply to find the cheapest pet insurance. It's to find coverage that makes sense for your pet, your finances, and the level of protection you're comfortable with.

What Should You Look for in a Pet Insurance Policy?

Not all pet insurance policies provide the same coverage. Before choosing a plan, take time to understand what's included, what's excluded, and how much you could be responsible for paying out of pocket:

  • What illnesses and injuries are covered?
  • What conditions or treatments are excluded?
  • Are there waiting periods before coverage begins?
  • What deductible options are available?
  • What percentage of eligible expenses will be reimbursed?
  • Are there annual or other coverage limits?
  • Is preventive or wellness care available?
  • Are there age, breed, or other eligibility requirements?
  • Can I use any licensed veterinarian?
  • How are claims submitted and reimbursements paid?
