Holiday Decoration Safety

It's the most joyous time of the year!  Bright lights, burning candles, and Christmas trees bring the grandeur of the holidays to personal homes and businesses.

Sadly, these same decorations can also become fire and safety hazards. According to the U.S. Fire Administration there are 250 Christmas tree fires and 14 related deaths each year in the United States.

In order to truly make the season merry and bright, Ansay & Associates recommends a few safety tips to keep your family, friends, and customers safe.

Holiday Lights

  • Use newer lights that have fused plugs and discard older models.
  • Replace burnt out lights right away with the correct wattage bulbs.
  • Use outdoor bulbs when hanging lights outside.
  • Weather proof multiple extension cords at connection points when running them outdoors.
  • Use a sturdy ladder to climb on, plus insulated hooks to hang up the lights (nails or screws can pierce the cable).
  • Turn off or unplug lights before leaving your home or business.

Holiday Candles

  • Utilize fake, or battery operated candles in your holiday display instead of wax candles.
  • When wax candles are used keep them away from walls, curtains and bedding.
  • Always blow candles out before leaving a location for an extended period of time or going to sleep.

Holiday Trees

  • Use artificial trees in business and/ or home settings.
  • Secure artificial or "live" trees in stands so they do not fall over.
  • Water "live" trees daily so they do not dry out and/or catch fire.
  • Dispose of "live" trees when the branches are dried out or brittle.

Designate a Holiday Safety Person! Whether it's at home or a business, assign an official person to check your decorations daily.

The holidays are meant to be a joyous time of year.  Just take a little time to consider safety first as you choose and display your holiday decorations to brighten the holidays.

Season Greetings,
